Rod,

Another great piece. My dad had all those talents for fixing things and making things grow that your dad had. It seems to be that generation. My dad was tough as nails, but with a soft heart. Like your dad, he didn't understand my desire to go to college when there was plenty of work around. But he was supportive and proud of me at graduation. He never understood exactly what I did at IBM and DEC but was the first to congratulate me when I got a promotion. That moment in your car is just touching. Art

Thanks, Rod...really got me thinking about me and my Dad...

Growing up I always felt like a disappointment to my family..."he's away with the fairies"...I mistakenly attributed it to the stars...my family were all born in July - Cancers, which I understood to be practical, no nonsense, knuckle down kinda personalities (I've since learned differently, thanks to the Interwebs) - Anyway, I was born in August, a Leo, dreamy, show-offy, artistic, lazy...this was the emotional "reality" anyway, stars be damned. (It now occurs to me I might have had ADD...) So, instead of joining Dad's law firm, I drifted for a while, growing long hair, trying social work, and eventually, following my stars, emigrated to the States (with a girl), went to SVA in NYC and had a career in advertising and corporate art, which I loved. And interestingly, I always seemed to gain the trust of my bosses, thrusting more responsibility on me, and eventually having me "running things"...I now imagine, to the surprise of my old man...I understand his disappointment now...the firm slowly dissolved after he retired. I don't know if he ever felt resolved - I do.
